History of august
August is the eighth month of the year in the Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. This month was previously called sexilis in Latin, as it was the sixth month in the old Roman calendar. The Roman calendar began with Romulus in March 735 BC. It was the eighth month of October. The eighth month of August was when January or February was added by King Numa Pompilius at the beginning of the year in about 700 BCE. Or, when those two months were transferred from the beginning of the year to the end of 450 BCE by traitors. January 1 in 153 BCE was determined as the beginning of the year. August is named for Augustus Caesar who became the Roman Consul in this month. There are 31 days of the month because Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 45 BCE.

August, either in the hemisphere, is the seasonal equivalent of February in the other. In the Northern Hemisphere it is a summer month and in the Southern Hemisphere it is a winter month. In a typical year, any other month begins on the same day of the week as August, although in the leap year, February begins on the same day.
